About the work
"Run from the poppy fields, my friend was a title that came early on in this piece. It used to have two figures standing in the middle and the two horses looked like they were running away from something.
I started painting these poppies around the figures, eventually the whole canvas became the colour of the poppy and the centre of the painting kept its dark colour, reminiscent of the poppy itself.
I tend to pick up different versions of my own paintings, in one way this is an ode to my mother’s past as a horse trainer & breeder, tales of magnificent horses: Caruso & Kelly’s eye distinctively come to mind, they meant a lot to her, they helped her growing up from being a quiet girl to helping her blossom into someone outspoken, confident and forward thinking.
In essence, the painting holds a lot of power to me, I get a great sense of strength when looking at it. It becomes less about running away and more about facing your fears, going against the tide & standing your ground.
In another way of looking at it and going back to the title, I think it can represent an attempt as grasping an understanding of addiction, using the poppy as a reference to heroin, the two horses to me symbolise a person trying to break free from an entrapment, specifically from addiction. It’s something I’ve never suffered from but I’ve witnessed & tried to understand as a bystander how it would feel like trying to break the chain." Billy Bagilhole
